SAROS: A New Sci-Fi Adventure Built for PS5
The creators of Returnal are back with their next major action game.
SAROS, developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, is a fast-paced single-player sci-fi action game that takes players to the mysterious planet Carcosa. The game launched exclusively for PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2026, with enhancements for PS5 Pro.
Set beneath the shadow of a mysterious eclipse, SAROS combines intense third-person combat, cinematic storytelling, exploration, and permanent character progression into Housemarque's latest evolution of its signature gameplay style.
Welcome to Carcosa
SAROS takes place on Carcosa, a hostile and constantly changing alien world surrounding a lost off-world colony.
Players take control of Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer searching for answers while confronting the strange forces that have consumed the planet. As Arjun explores Carcosa, he'll encounter dangerous creatures, mysterious environments, and characters connected to the colony's dark history.
The planet itself is an important part of the experience. Carcosa changes as players progress, creating new challenges and encounters while maintaining the mysterious atmosphere that defines SAROS.
Fast-Paced "Bullet Ballet" Combat
If you've played Returnal, you'll recognize Housemarque's emphasis on speed and precision.
SAROS features what the studio calls "Bullet Ballet" combat. Players must move quickly, avoid incoming attacks, use their weapons strategically, and learn enemy attack patterns.
Arjun can dodge, shield himself and use a parry ability to reflect certain projectiles back toward enemies. The result is combat that rewards timing, movement and quick decision-making.
And when the biggest enemies appear, players can expect intense boss encounters designed to test everything they've learned.
Death Doesn't Mean Starting Over
One of SAROS' biggest differences from Returnal is how it handles progression.
Instead of making every death feel like a complete reset, SAROS allows players to make permanent upgrades. Players can improve their weapons, suit parts and abilities, allowing Arjun to become stronger after each run.
That creates an interesting gameplay loop:
Explore → Fight → Die → Upgrade → Return Stronger
Every attempt can teach you something while also contributing toward your long-term progression.
A Mysterious Story
SAROS isn't just about shooting enemies.
Housemarque has built the game around a mysterious science-fiction story involving the lost colony on Carcosa and the ominous eclipse surrounding the planet.
Players encounter an ensemble cast of characters throughout the game, along with conversations, audio logs and Soltari holograms that help reveal what happened to the colony.
Arjun Devraj is portrayed by actor Rahul Kohli, bringing a central human performance to SAROS' otherwise strange and hostile world.
Designed for PlayStation 5
SAROS was built specifically for PS5, taking advantage of the console's hardware to create a detailed alien world filled with visual effects and fast-moving combat.
The game supports features including 4K visuals, DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, while PS5 Pro receives additional enhancements including PSSR technology.
The game's atmosphere is also supported by a dark electronic score from Sam Slater, whose previous work includes Chernobyl and Joker.
SAROS Editions
SAROS launched with two main editions:
- Standard Edition — $69.99 MSRP
- Digital Deluxe Edition — $79.99 MSRP
The Digital Deluxe Edition includes three special Enforcer suits inspired by other PlayStation games, including Returnal, God of War and Ghost of Yōtei.
Is SAROS Worth Checking Out?
For PS5 players who enjoy fast-paced action, challenging combat and mysterious science-fiction worlds, SAROS is an especially interesting release.
Housemarque is taking the foundation established with Returnal and changing the progression system so that every death can contribute to permanent growth. Combined with Carcosa's changing environments, intense combat and cinematic story, SAROS offers a distinctive take on the modern sci-fi action genre.
Final Thoughts
SAROS is more than another sci-fi shooter. It's Housemarque's attempt to combine its arcade-inspired combat with a deeper cinematic story and a progression system designed around becoming stronger after every defeat.
If you're looking for a visually impressive PS5 experience with challenging combat, mysterious lore and a constantly evolving alien world, SAROS deserves a place on your gaming radar.
